Parent Newsletter - February 27, 2014

Message from the Principal

Really? As I sit here writing today's parent newsletter, I look out my window to see more snow falling! When will it end? The one relief that comes to mind is that I will not be getting up at 4:30 tomorrow morning to decide if the school should be closed since we already have a scheduled day off! Hopefully we will be able to make it through the parent teacher conferences scheduled for tonight since they really are a valuable communication tool between school and home.

It appears that the State of Ohio is getting close to making the decision regarding the number of days that will be added to the original five calamity days granted for emergency closings. My latest understanding is that either three or four additional days will be granted for students. Teachers will be required to go longer. Beaumont has currently used six calamity days so I foresee that we are in a safe place in regards to not needing to make up any of the days we have missed so far. Just to let you know, the State has also instituted the use of "Blizzard Bags" for schools that might be affected by the unusual amount of snow days. Schools are allowed to prepare work ahead of time and provide students with work to do at home in place of actually being in a classroom. Our teachers are prepared to post assignments or "Blizzard Bag" work on Edline should we get in a position where we exceed the number of calamity days the State has allowed. It is my hope we don't get to this point, but it is a comfort to know that we are in a pretty safe place. Let's pray we have no other emergencies or calamities that would cause us a long closure.

We have had a few issues with student parking so I would like to clarify the school policies regarding off campus parking. Students that drive to school are not required to purchase a parking pass to park in one of our school lots if they choose to park on one of the side streets that are close to campus. A school policy regarding parking on North Park Drive has been in effect for many years. Our policy is to not allow student parking on this road. In the past, we have had numerous issues with concerns regarding the safety of our students who have parked in this area. With all the congestion and additional traffic at drop off and dismissal, we have had accidents and injuries occur. Please be aware that we have repeatedly reminded the girls that they are not permitted to park on this street. We will be issuing detentions for any student that does not follow our school policy. Please understand this policy has been in place for years to protect our girls and keep them safe. Their safety is our top priority.

Finally, many of you may remember that Bishop Lennon granted a day off to our students and faculty when he visited the school during Catholic Schools' Week. We have decided to use this gift on Holy Thursday. Therefore, school will be closed on Thursday April 17th. Hopefully you will be able to enjoy the longer Easter vacation. Thank you, Bishop Lennon!

I look forward to seeing many of you at our Parent Teacher Conferences this evening. Stop by and say hello. As always, Beaumont is blessed.

Mary Whelan
