Message from the Principal

Dear parents and friends of Beaumont,

What a week it has been! Who would have dreamed that we would have an extra day added to our, already long weekend. Not expecting a day off provides much opportunity to sit back, relax, slow down and enjoy a day of peace and quiet. That is what I did, and hope that you were able to do the same.

On a sad note, we received word that a special friend of Beaumont School passed away over our break. Sr. Margaret Ann Kelly loved and supported Beaumont School. She was a Beaumont graduate (class of '49) and served for 15 years as assistant principal, principal and president. She was the school's biggest fan and never missed an opportunity to return or ask about what was happening here. When I was installed as the newest principal in 2010, she was eager to welcome me to the ranks and provided me with wisdom and well wishes. She always found ways to encourage me and bless me for the ministry I have chosen here at Beaumont. I will surely miss her twinkling blue eyes and infectious smile. A beautiful portrait of her has been placed next to the library in memory of her and the many things she did for Beaumont. It was painted by our Artist in Residence, Stanka Kordic in 1997 and captures the inner beauty of this fine woman. Please keep her and the  Ursuline Sisters' Community in your prayers. They lost a very special woman this week who will be missed by all. Her funeral will take place tomorrow evening at the Ursuline Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity at 7:00 pm.

Our girls attended an all school assembly that was coordinated by one of our own students, Dia Jones. Dia is a member of the junior class and belongs to a community group called SAY (Social Advocates for Youth.) She approached me and Mrs. Teeples earlier in the year and asked to coordinate an awareness activity here at Beaumont School. The group was looking to bring awareness on Teen Dating Violence to the many schools they each attended. Dia was organized and persistent in keeping Mrs. Teeples and me up to date on the group's progress. She secured a speaker and planned an awareness day for the school. Her guest speaker was Ms. Yvonka Hall. She was a dynamic speaker who works for the Neighborhood Leadership Development Program as an Alumni Support Manager. She shared her own life story with our girls. The teachers and staff were amazed at how quiet and focused our girls were during the entire presentation. Her personal commitment to use her work and voice to make a difference in the lives of others was carried out today. Her messages were powerful and her statistics were frightening. Please take the time to have a discussion with your daughter about this presentation. I am grateful she was able to speak to our girls and hope and pray that our girls never experience the sadness and death that dating violence can bring.

Finally, I ask your prayers for the girls and adults who will be traveling to Washington, DC this evening to attend the Right to Life March tomorrow. Mrs. Riley, Ms. Brandt and I will board a bus at St. Ignatius at 11:00 pm this evening with 18 of our students and travel all night to arrive in DC at 7:00 am. We will attend a Mass at the Basilica before heading to the Capitol Mall to begin the ceremonies, talks and March. Experience tells me it will be cold and crowded, but a powerful example of faith and prayerful support. Please keep us in your prayers and thank God for the gift of life and the gift of our children.

God bless all of you and thanks again for your prayers and support. As always, Beaumont is blessed,

Mary Whelan
