Parent Newsletter - March 6, 2014

Message from the Principal

Yesterday we met as a school community to mark the beginning of the Lenten season by participating in an all school liturgy. Our celebrant was Father Gary Chmura from Our Lady of Peace on Shaker Boulevard. The afternoon service was a quieter, more somber Mass allowing us an opportunity to grow in our relationship with God and to deepen our commitment to our faith.

With the crazy schedules we all seem to keep and the long hours of work and responsibilities, I often wonder how so many of us continue to be productive and find time to enjoy and relax with family. Lent provides us with an opportunity to change some of this. It asks us to slow down, pray more deeply, and reflect on both the negative and positive actions we participate in each day. It asks us to make a conscious decision to change something in our lives. Often this is done by giving up things, but it can also be done by doing things.

I had a conversation with some of our girls about their Lenten plans. Some will be giving up pop, candy, the vending machine, and even desserts. One talked about the ultimate sacrifice of giving up Twitter and Instagram! Now that's a sacrifice! I shared with them that I would be doing something this year rather than giving up something. I told them I, teamed up with my husband, would write a letter each day to someone we felt would benefit from opening their mailbox to receive a letter of friendship, support, or encouragement from someone who cared. We wrote our first letter together to a friend in Pittsburgh who lost his wife almost a year ago. Our hope is to bring a smile to his face. I must admit that I feel this experience will have just as great an impact on my husband and I. Our relationship will ultimately grow stronger and healthier. Far too often we never find time to do things together. This "team time" will be one of the greatest gifts we give each other this Lent. It will be a challenge at times, but something I think will strengthen our relationship with each other, with our friends and more importantly with our God. Don't be surprised if one of these weeks this weekly Parent Newsletter comes signed by "Mike and Mary Whelan!" We both consider you friends!

This week we invited all our "Pre-freshmen" students and families to attend our Curriculum Night. It was well attended and our Admissions team made the girls and their parents feel welcomed and informed. This year each family received a yard sign proclaiming "Future Beaumont Blue Streak - Class of 2018." Keep an eye out for them. They should be popping up all over the Cleveland area! We will officially begin their enrollment process during the next two weeks so by the end of the month we should have a pretty solid number of incoming freshmen for next year.

Don't forget to mark your calendars with the "Bishop's Day Off" on Holy Thursday. As I mentioned last week, we will not be in session on Thursday, April 17. The girls have been told this but we wanted to give you ample time to take advantage of an extra day added to the already long holiday break.
As always, Beaumont is blessed,

Mary Whelan
